Not Just Another Catch Phrase
In my opinion, "Community over competition" seems to be a catch phrase that is just thrown around nilly willy in the Facebook groups and forums. It's something that photographers try to use to seem friendly, but when it comes down to actually helping others, they tend to go silent. Of course, the idea is sound, a rising wave helps everyone right? Well, I think it seems that many people do not understand this concept and will only help in certain areas that benefit them only. So, I write this blog to challenge my readers and followers; when was the last time that you actually practiced community over competition? Like really helped?
If you you cannot remember or it's been awhile, I challenge you to go out today and make it happen! What are some ways that you can do this:
- Make a blog post about why you choose a certain location.
- Make a blog post about a certain technique that you like to use.
- Teach a class or setup a workshop
- Plan a photo walk
- Find a new photographer on Instagram and let them know that you like their work and let them know that they can reach out to you for help.
These are just some examples, and while some of them may cost some time and money, what you may receive in return can help you and your journey immensely! I think as photographers, we lose site that we ALL were beginners at one time and having a more seasoned photographer give you some validation made you feel so much better about yourself. Photography is hard, but just like any other hobby/profession, its harder when you have jerks trying to hold you down. Do not be that person, be someone who actually practices "Community over Competition."
Just my two cents ~ Joe
