FAQ
Is there a date set yet?
As of this time, there is currently not a date set. We will be working on selecting a date very soon however.
Where is White Sands, NM?
White Sands National Park is located outside of Alamagordo, NM (Google Maps Info). Mileage Information:
- Lubbock, TX - 296 Miles
- Dallas, TX - 598 Miles
- Fort Worth, TX - 567 Miles
- Midland, TX - 297 Miles
- San Antonio, TX - 646 Miles
- Austin, TX 671 - Miles
- Houston, TX - 841 Miles
- Amarillo, TX - 363 Miles
- El Paso, TX - 95.5 Miles
Do I Need to Worry about Missles?
No, you do not. The actual missile range is outside of the park boundaries, however, they will close the park and traffic during actual missile testing. I have been there over a dozen times and have yet to run into any testing during my visits. Also, most "fragments" have already been found or will be found very quickly and removed.
How long will the shoot be?
I am expecting to be able to shoot out there for at least 4-5 hours if not more. The park closes the gate basically at sunset.
How much does it cost?
The park has responded and I now know the costs: $100 application fee, which I will take care of ASAP. $150 Park Fee, $25 per Vehicle Fee, $200 Monitor Fee. Here is the problem, I have to pay the fee upfront once the application is approved, so if you decide that you are going to go and we count your vehicle and then cannot make it, I cannot refund your fee. Probably for best practice, if you plan on riding with someone, make sure that you are both definitely good. I am going to use a medium estimate of 15 vehicles for now. $825 grand total divided by 20 people = $41.25 per person; Divided by 25 = $33 per person. Once we have secured a date, then I will create a new form that will ask if you plan on bringing your own vehicle or riding with someone. If you have not filled out the Participant Info form yet, you have until Sunday, unless people want me to extend the time for a week or 3/4 days. Just let me know what y'all want to do.
What little things should I know?
- During the summer, it's HOT during the day. Be prepared and bring lots of water. I plan on bringing a cooler of waters to have available for the group.
- The sand is actually fairly cool to the touch, so walking barefoot will be good.
- It can be windy, so sand will get EVERYWHERE. Protect your equipment accordingly.
- You are ABSOLUTELY NOT ALLOWED TO FLY A DRONE. The park is nestled between two military installations and you will be escorted out by the military immediately.
- Full Nudity is not allowed. You will be kicked out by the park rangers.
- The sunset is spectacular, so be prepared to stay until then.
- Alamogordo is small, but has plenty of hotel options should you decide to stay overnight.
